How To Increase Your Profit by 10-30%

Have you ever purchased a Phone, or Digital Camcorder, or a Car and been asked if you would like to buy the other attachments or extended warranty?

Or have you ever gone to purchase a basic appliance, say a washing machine, and planned on spending say #25,000 – but instead left with a better model to meet your needs, which costs #35,000?

And have you ever found yourself saying “sure, why not” to such offers? Even though you didn't order or intend to order that additional item when you arrived?

The fact is, statistically 30% of people say “yes” to these questions and the companies effectively employing this simple strategy earn as much as 10-30% of their profits from this time tested marketing tactic (ironically, our survey shows 88% of companies don’t systematically use this tactic).

The concept is called up sell or cross-sell.

Up sell is where you get the customer to purchase more or a greater quantity of what they are ordering and cross-sell is where you get the customer to buy an additional item or service that they did not intend to order.

The key to such systems involves timing, proper item selection, understanding of marginal profit and a measurement system.

Ok, let’s start making some money.

Do this:

Offer 10 of your customers an additional item at the point of purchase and see how many say yes (make it a small added cost). Change the way you ask for the offer itself.

Write it down! I know it is simple but if you experience 2-3 saying yes and then calculate how much that will earn you, this will get you excited to formalize a system.

HOW TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS NOW!

Dear Friend and Fellow Business Owner,

Do you remember why you went into business for yourself?

You may say it was to “make a lot of money”. Even though it’s true that you can make a lot of money owning your own business, that’s not the real reason you went into business.

That was only PART of the picture.

The real reason you went into business for yourself…

The real reason you went into business for yourself was to “chart your own course”… to be your own boss… to have a little more “free time”.

Free time. Yeah right.

Instead, what do you have? You have a 24 hour a day/7 day a week… J-O-B!

Do we even remember how to spell VACATION? Oh, I get it. Vacation was the last time you went to that friend for job deal!! Do you see what has happened? The real reason you went into business for yourself has all but vanished.

“Vision without Action is a Daydream-
Action without Vision is a Nightmare”

You can have all the plans in the world, but if you fail to take action on your plans, it means nothing. It’s just a daydream. On the other hand, if you have forgotten the real reason you went into business for yourself, you are taking ACTION without VISION, and that’s a NIGTHMARE!

Here’s how it works… You wake up every day and just respond to whatever problems that come up for the day. You don’t have a clear vision. You are just taking action. You are just reacting.

Without clearly defined goals, you will never know where you are going and if and when you ever get there!

This is a deadly assumption.

They quickly realize that someone has to do the marketing. Someone has to do the bookkeeping. Someone has to answer the telephone. The business needs a certain amount of funding just to cover cash flow…and on and on. All of a sudden, it is not about running the business anymore. It’s about running a business.

Michael Gerber of E-MYTH coined a term called “working ON  the business” rather than “working IN the business”.By working “on” the business, i.e. planning the business, implementing a marketing plan, having an operational system, creating a financial forecast, etc. would be the determining factor of whether the business was successful or not. Of course you have to provide a good service…

but there are plenty of great BUSINESS OWNERS that are starving.

Why? Because they don’t understand or are unwilling to run the business.

So, in order to reach your goal of going into business (like taking a certain amount of time off), is going to require some working “on” the business. It will take planning the business rather than simply letting things happen by accident. Success doesn’t happen by accident – it happens by intentionally focusing on what it is you want, outlining a plan – and implementing that plan.

Assumptions, Strategies, and Discipline

Dr. Peter Drucker states in his book “Management Challenges for the 21st Century” that any successful  business is based on 3 things: Assumptions, Strategies, and Discipline.

  1. Assumptions. If we do not make the proper assumptions about our marketplace, the production of our people, etc., then it does not matter what you do. If I assume that the public wants a certain widget, and they aren’t the least bit interested, then I really don’t have anything to work with.

  1. Strategies. Our assumptions can be “dead on”, but we apply the wrong strategy. Example… we complain that our customers won’t pay our price. This hints that we are assuming that people should or that there are some out there that will. That assumption is correct. However, if we are advertising the lowest price and using techniques that do not attract high quality clients then it is no mystery why they won’t pay our price! So, in this case, the assumption is correct, but the strategy is all wrong. The strategy must match the assumption!

  1. Discipline. We could have both our assumptions, and our strategies right on target, but if we fail to implement, it means nothing. This reminds me of the difference between successful and unsuccessful people. Successful people are willing to do what unsuccessful people are unwilling to do. Not that they can’t just that they won’t. You can put the perfect plan together, but if you don’t implement it, it won’t do you any good at all. It’s worthless.

This is part of what you will learn at MONEYMATTERS round table with Joy Akinlolu on Oct 29, 2014 @ Space fm conference center liberty road Ibadan. Fee: #5,000 only.

HOW TO BECOME THE MOST WANTED EXPERT IN ANY FIELD

Maybe you've heard of experts who never need to think about marketing, yet they’re fully booked.
In many cases, the stories are more hype than reality. But becoming the most wanted expert isn't impossible.
It doesn't mean you can charge outrageous fees and always have a year long queue of clients.
You can, however, charge more than most experts in your field and get new clients consistently with relatively little effort. Of course it won’t happen overnight, and there are several ways you can sabotage your progress.
It all boils down to a few key aspects of building your business:
1. Pick the right focus for your business.
2. Use effective ways to reach your prospects.
3. Get referrals from your clients.
The first points is surprisingly common problem for most people.
It’s very easy to pick such a wide “focus” that prospects won’t trust you. If you claim to be good at everything, they just won’t believe you. Jack of all trades.
Instead, they pick someone who did a better job at picking the focus for their business.
There are a lot of things that go into picking the right focus for your business (your specialty), but most importantly, you need to do it. You can’t just be a general “expert.” That is
just too unfocused to work.
Reaching your prospects in an effective way is much easier when you've figured out your specialty. You’ll also get more referrals because you’ll be easier to refer.
But it all starts with the right focus.
You can start by thinking of what you want to focus on, but there’s a lot more you need to think about to get the best results.
There’s a whole lesson about finding the right focus for your business on my show #moneymatters on space fm 90.1 every Tuesday 4:15-5 pm and from my training for consultants. Inbox me or leave a comment if you will like to join the train of successful consultants.

HOW THE 25 YEARS GUY MADE HIS MONEY, A FULL INTERVIEW

JOY: WELCOME to the Show Mr Timothy Anietie!

TIMOTHY: Thank you so much Mr Joy Akinlolu (smile..)

JOY: Since i am aware that your area of speciallity is Graphic Design, what opportunities exist here?

TIMOTHY: Graphic design is the art of communication, stylizing, and problem-solving through the use of type, space and image. The field is considered a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term "graphic design" is used interchangeably with these due to overlapping skills involved.

Graphic designers use various methods to create and combine words, symbols, and images to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. A graphic designer may use a combination of typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce a final result. Graphic design often refers to both the process (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (designs) which are generated.

Common uses of graphic design include identity (logos and branding), publications (magazines, newspapers and books), print advertisements, posters, billboards, website graphics and elements, signs and product packaging. For example, a product package might include a logo or other artwork, Book cover, organized text and pure design elements such as images, shapes and color which unify the piece. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design, especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

JOY: How did you start graphics designing on the internet?

TIMOTHY: Interestingly, I did Desktop publishing in Basic Computer Training some years ago. Then we could design with Microsoft Word #Smile.

Afterwards, we were introduced to Adobe PageMaker which we explored and used for publishing designs. Subsequently, CorelDraw was introduced and all felt like, why did we have to suffer all the while with PageMaker that is not as flexible compared to CorelDraw.

Although we did a lot with CorelDraw, but the discovery of Photoshop 7 then was like bringing heaven to earth. Despite all expectations, we were all told we can only edit picture on Photoshop and make the design on CorelDraw.

I started professionally in 2011 when I picked up Entrepreneurship. I had after my Basic Training obtained several Professional Trainings both online and offline on Website and Graphic Designs.

With the discovery of some great software like the CS Version of Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, Advanced CorelDraw and many other Graphics tools to mention but few; I became an Online Branding expert. I Implemented e-Design and Branding as part of our Services; which has since yielded good responses.

JOY: When and how did you get your first job?

TIMOTHY: Being paid for a skill that you thought was just part of the learning curriculum was fun. It was more than a surprise to me when I got the first Graphics job that paid me, even though the money wasn’t much.

I got paid for Graphics job before I became a Professional on the job. It was in 2008, that I got my first Graphics job offline; which paid me N15,000 with Printing.

While in Computer school then, I was always seen as the best in all designs in my set; starting from basic softwares like Microsoft word and Adobe PageMaker. Although, I never knew I would be an Entrepreneur as I am today; I printed my first Business card while in the second month of the Training and it was designed with Microsoft word.

The first set of the printed cards got damaged in my wallet without sharing it. I was angry with myself, but decided to print again. This time I stopped giving  my phone number to anyone who requested for it and would simply issue out my card, even though it was printed with a very low quality paper. And through it I made my first money from Graphics design.

But the door opened widely when I discovered the Internet and how it can be turned into a Market place for a good business. I started learning about the Internet and Marketing in 2009 and was opportune to be part of the Success Digest Family, which gave me more insight on the Internet trends.

I discovered I could make a whole lot of money with my skills on the Internet through different available freelance mediums and also through Online Branding of my personal and corporate identity.

JOY: What other ways do you source for jobs?

TIMOTHY: Internet has actually made life so beautiful for me and my business. Most times you will just wake up and see some mails of Enquiries about your charges and eventually all you need is to make sure you appear professional to seal it.

Having a professional online presence for every skill one acquires is something that should be taken as pertinent as brushing your teeth every morning.

Although, having a website is not enough; you must make sure that your website is well optimized for Search Engine visibility.

For instance, if you should check for the best website and Graphic Design Company in Nigeria, my Company’s website www.timtechsolution.com  will appear as number one or two on the first page of Google search or other search engines.

Based on experience in the business, many Firms who need this service don’t go about asking people who can do it, they simply make online search and who appears on the first page will be considered.  With this, we just keep having demands for Graphics Design, Online Branding, Website Design and Digital Marketing jobs.

It will help in the marketing, while you just have to do very little to convert to sale.
I also utilize Social Media platforms a lot in Marketing and sourcing for jobs, but you must understand the strategies in Social Media Marketing else you will waste lots of time without result.

Although, it’s really easy to fall into the same old routine as a designer. You find a client. You work on a project. You get paid. And then you start all over again.

But if you want to make more money and make money more regularly as a designer, you’ve got to think, research and discover other ways to make some cash. And I mean lots of different sources. Not just two.

Majority of the Freelance sites have more Design jobs than programming jobs. As a Graphic Designer, a site like GraphicRiver is probably the most suitable marketplace for you.

It is the place for business cards, icons, fonts, Photoshop, Actions & filters, flyers and other stock items. GraphicRiver has grown much in the past few years, so you should be aware of the competition and a huge number of (similar) files. Unique items would probably sell better here.

On other Freelance websites like

Each of them has what sells better and what doesn’t on the sites. So when you are using either of them, you need to study the sites and understand the kind of Graphics that are demanded on such site so to give you an idea of what to display when prospecting.

According to Research, it is Design jobs that sell better and faster on the freelance portals. The likes of eBook Cover Design, Web Banner Designs, Web Template Designs, Logo Designs, Banners and Fliers, Bill Board Designs, 3D Graphics, Animation, etc.
The four major ways I make money from these skills are:

Consulting

My firm serves as Online Branding and Digital Marketing Consulting firm for others. This gives us monthly, quarterly, or yearly payment, depending on the client.
We either handle it for some firms, or train some of their personnel on Online Branding with Web & Graphic Design Skills.

E-Learning Books and Videos:
We have developed several versions of Website & Graphics Design Videos, which many have been learning through it and they are being sold in all over the country and we have recently extended it to Ghana and India, through Digital Means.

Themes/Templates

You may not necessarily be the one to finish up the program; many programmers pay Graphics Designers online to Design just the Template structure, while they do the program. This is another source for every Graphics Designer who understands how to design Website Templates.

Freelancing and Direct Contact Delivery:
We have earlier shared some of the Freelancing websites which are very much reputable sources for every Freelancer. I have been exploring them and also with my Company’s optimized sites, we get contacted for projects.

JOY: How do you get your pay?

TIMOTHY:  This is determined by where you get the job. If it was on Freelance portal, there are options. Although it solely depends on the portal. PeoplePayhour has more flexible payment options likewise Freelance. However, some of them are operating with Paypal. When you have executed some projects and have been attested, you can have easy negotiation with your client.

For consultancy service or direct offline Design contract, 70% of the total charge is paid up front, while 30% is paid at the end of the project.

JOY: How can someone acquire the skill? Where? How long?

TIMOTHY: Graphics Design skill isn’t like every other skills that anyone can easily acquire online. If you must learn through an e-Learning Material, it must be a material that is developed in a very detailed way like ours.

First, I don’t like encouraging people to go for it because there is money in it; rather your interest must be the first consideration. It requires much brainstorming to bring out the creative part of you.

It’s always been frustrating when a client says, I don’t like the design. That was the case when I started earlier. However, we have an Academy which we’ve been able to train more than 2000 persons for both open and indoor Trainings.

It is approved Information and Communication Technology Training Institute called Infotech School. A subsiary of TimTech Academy. In our Academy, before you are accepted as a student; you will be interviewed so as to enable us bring out the best part of you.

The duration for this course that will qualify you for Diploma in Graphics Design is one (1) Month. While other related courses like Website Design and Consulting takes a month and half, Web Programming takes three Months, Digital Marketing takes two weeks, Mobile Application Development, takes a month and half, etc. More details about this can be found on www.infotechschool.com .

It’s more flexible for those who are busy and far from our Training Centers, as they can get our detailed e-Learning Videos at www.webconsultingguide.com.

JOY: What kind of graphics design jobs do people demand for online?

TIMOTHY: It’s obvious you may not get the kind of job needed offline, on the online portals. But based on experience, Graphics Design jobs mostly demanded are Web Graphics, Logo Designs, Web banners Designs, Sidebar placement banners, e-Book Covers, Website Template Design, Fliers, Advert Graphics, etc.

JOY: How much can one earn per month?

TIMOTHY: Every skill or business that is done diligently will always yield fruitful income, they say. In Web & Graphics Design, your creativity, Portfolio, Strategy, USP(Unique Selling Point), will determine how much you make.

However, you can make a minimum of N100,000 monthly; if you project professionally. Meanwhile, I will want to advise that you combine the Graphics skill with Website Design and Development skill. With that, you can earn between N150,000 and above monthly. It’s a guarantee from experience.

JOY:  What gifts do you have for our listeners?

TIMOTHY: They can have the following:

THIS ONE MARKETING STRATEGY WILL MAKE YOU RICH!

This one marketing strategy will make you rich! Yes it will, but most small business owners like you is not taking full advantage of it) I want to share a strategy that has absolutely changed my life. And it is at the foundation of all that I do in marketing and in business.

This strategy is so simple, but yet very much overlooked, and misunderstood “marketing” strategy can do more for your business than perhaps anything else.

This strategy is something that you already know about, but you are probably misusing and under-
utilizing like most small business owners. What is this all important strategy and skill? Networking. Yes, “networking”.

Now, before you nail me because you think you already know how to “network”, let me ask you by offering the following test:

Do you think networking is about meeting people to get business? Then you are wrong.

Do you think networking is going to some business meetings and passing out your complimentary cards? You are wrong.

Do you think networking, yes does not bring in massive amounts of business? Then you are wrong again.

Let’s start out with what networking really is. It  is “the process of building relationships with the mutual desire and intent to connect to others”.

Meaning, it’s about building relationships.

It’s not about getting jobs. However, many jobs will naturally come from doing networking right. When networking is done right, both parties should understand that it is a mutually beneficial relationship. Too many people approach networking with the “gimme some jobs” attitude. And that my friend, is a very BIG MISTAKE!

So, how do you get it right?

#1: Become an Asset to Others Before They Become an Asset to You.

Look for ways to become an “asset to others before they become an asset to you”. Here’s how
that works. When you meet someone that may be a networking partner, instead of thinking about
how you can teach them about what you do, be thinking about how you can be an asset to them
first.

Be very interested in what they do, how they do it, their family life (without getting too personal), their hobbies, interests, etc. Practice asking as many questions with interest as you can think of.

Remember, people LOVE to talk about themselves! So, keep them talking about themselves as long as you possibly can, at thesame time looking for ways you can be an asset to them, their clients, their members, their
community, their kids, their pets, their networking group, their home, or whatever.

So, once they finally realize that they are doing all the talking, and you are doing all the listening,
something magical happens… They say “so what do you do?” I have so much about myself what about you?

Now, and only now are they ready to receive your valuable message. They are much more interested
now. Why? Because you showed interest in them.

#2: A Phrase you must Incorporate.

Now that you have their full attention, you want to keep your goal in mind. Remember, that you
want to be an asset to them. You have collected enough information to see how you can help them, but here’s the problem. If you just begin telling them how you can help them, another psychological trigger. Without realizing it, their emotion immediately says “There’s a catch. What is it?” And they won’t act.

Internally, we know that nothing is really “free” and if someone wants to help us, there IS a cost somewhere, somehow.

So, here’s what to do…

Let the person know that you have some ways that you can “help each other”. Now the networking person’s mind and emotions will be in alignment and they will be eager to take you up on that opportunity. After sharing what you do, hone in on one of the possible “become an asset” items.

“One way that we could help each other is…”

Example: Let’s say that they have a client list that is perfect for you. “I could give you some information that would be very helpful to your clients, and it would make you look really good. That would help you and of course as your clients learn about me, that can in turn help me as well”.

A mutually beneficial project that is a win-win-win.

You may not even go that far when you first meet someone. Instead, say “why don’t we meet over a snack and see how we can help each other?” They will say yes, and you follow with “great, when is the best time to contact you?”

Now you have PERMISSION to follow up!  It works.

So stop just going up to people and spilling out all the services you provide, but start listening intently for how you can “help each other” and you will find the “gold” in networking. Just as the scriptures puts it: "There is more happiness in giving than in receiving."

Now you have it, let me hear from you, can this be of help to you?
